Little Britain – Series 1 and 2

Author: Dr. Mandar V. Bichu

If you like totally crazy, politically incorrect and over-the-top humor, you won’t need to look further than this immensely popular BAFTA-winner British comedy series. Don’t expect a continuing storyline- just a totally out of control laugh riot with many short comic sketches coming at a relentless pace, not giving viewers any time to think. The humor often goes below the belt but that’s where it is intended to be!

Writers-actors Matt Lucas and David Walliams (Yes, that’s the way he spells his surname!) are the two guys who literally carry the show on their shoulders and Tom Baker’s commentary adds to the fun. Changing their apparels, appearances and activities at the proverbial drop of the hat, Lucas and Walliams portray the weirdest characters Britain must have ever seen! So Lucas- with his well-rounded figure can turn into a fast-talking juvenile delinquent girl- Vicky, a lonely gay – Daffyd, a wheel-chair bound Andy, a Fat Fighters diet instructor Marjorie or a lenient asylum director- Dr. Lawrence. The other partner in crime- Walliams with his tall, dark features converts himself into the Prime Minister’s gay secretary- Sebastian, a horrible looking transvestite- Emily, Andy’s hassled friend - Lou and a raving lunatic lady- Anne! To add to fun, there are many more equally wacky characters- most played by these two, some by others.

Underage Vicky’s futile efforts to gain entry into a pub, Daffyd’s desperate bid to remain the ‘single gay in the village’, Andy’s sickeningly selfish, sadistic wheel-chair antics, Marjorie’s racist acid tongue, Sebastian’s ‘love’ for Prime Minister, Anne’s destructive acts – so many sketches and characterizations leave their mark.

The comedy is vicious as well as an intelligent mix of verbal and visual gags. The humor spares no one from top to bottom (and I do mean ‘bottom’!), poking fingers at Britain’s peculiar soft spots- right from the Sunday roast tradition, pubs, public schools, hospitals, politics, regional accents, racism, sex, snobbery and gay rights! Such humor is not to be analyzed- it is just to be shamelessly enjoyed! Mind you- if you are the serious, intellectual type, strictly avoid ‘Little Britain’ like plague- it might convert you into reckless revelers! Don’t you believe me? Just look at what it did to UK’s most respected and seriously high- brow newspaper The Times.

The Times ended up calling ‘Little Britain’ a “Nation
