Jeeves and Wooster
ITV
The butler-and-master duo of Jeeves and Wooster is genius comic author P.G. Wodehouse’s most famous literary creation. Reading this duo’s innumerable crazy escapades is an unforgettable joyous and mirthful experience. The DVD box- set of ITV’s TV-series ‘Jeeves and Wooster’ brings these comic capers to home screens. Of course, the first question the Wodehouse- fans are likely to ask is whether these TV adaptations as good as the original books?
The answer is equivocal. Yes, Hugh Laurie as the bumbling, idle rich, young bachelor Bertie Wooster and Stephen Fry as his serious, intelligent and resourceful butler Jeeves, both perfectly capture the unique feudal spirit. The period-feel of the 1930s is also superbly recreated but unfortunately the cinematic limitations dictate that plots are somewhat modified from the original and that may prove to be the only hitch for the Wodehouse- faithful! As the series progresses, these reservations are dispelled and the superb acting of the lead duo (and that of the supporting cast) casts its spell. They really make you believe that indeed Wodehouse’s characters were just like them!
Wodehouse’s comic genius was in the way he could tell same story in so many different ways and make all of them laugh riots. So going by his formula, Bertie either keeps falling for different unsuitable maidens or lands in some outlandish missions planned by his authoritarian aunts. A goofy blend of friends, foes, impersonations, coincidences and misunderstandings then add to the comic confusion and finally it is left to the clever Jeeves to come up with one of his ingenious schemes to rescue his young master from getting locked up in matrimony or jail!
If you haven’t yet been introduced to Wodehouse’s comedy, these DVDs may well be your great chance!
