Author: Dr. Mandar V. Bichu

Amongst the hundreds of Hindi film-songs and remixes churned out daily, there are only a few which really make their mark- sometimes through a distinct voice, sometimes through a different style and sometimes through sheer luck. Such songs then become the power-songs- showing the power to change trends and define styles. These chart-topping, heart-stopping trendsetters not only bring in the moolah for music-companies but they also inspire countless clones to follow in their wake.

Here’s a look at the Top 10 power songs from recent times.

1.

Bheege Honth Tere- (Singer- Kunal Ganjawalla, Film- Murder)

This sultry sensuous number- apparently inspired by a Pakistani tune, well and truly set the house on fire and bagged practically every award in Bollywood. It also brought to fore the voice of Kunal Ganjawalla. Sharp, robust and macho- Kunal’s voice with its westernized tint clicked big time and the number became the party favourite.

After Mohammed Rafi’s Love In Tokyo- sizzler Aaja Re Aa Zara Lahrake Aa Zara and Kishore Kumar’s Aradhana- show-stealer Roop Tera Mastana, this was perhaps the first song to really tap the male sensual appeal.

2.

Tere Liye Hum Hain Jiye (Singers- Lata Mangeshkar and Roop Kumar Rathod, Film- Veer Zaara)

Yash Chopra’s decision to use the late composer Madan Mohan’s age-old tunes for his modern-era Indo-Pak love-story was a daring decision. The skeptical critics tried to point out the obvious Yash Chopra-styling of Madan Mohan’s compositions in this album but the trio of melody, nostalgia and hype succeeded in connecting to masses.

This beautiful tune rendered evocatively by Lata Mangeshkar and Roop Kumar Rathod was the pick of this album. For connoisseurs it was a much below par Lata- Madan Mohan combine
