Veere Di Wedding
Year: 2018
Director: Shashanka Ghosh
Cast: Kareena Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar, Shikha Talsania, Sumeet Vyas
What’s the plot?
Four Veerey-s(a Punjabi word for best female buddies!) meet up after years on the occasion of one of them getting married. The passage of time has seen their lives go on different paths. The bride-to-be (Kareena Kapoor) is having pre-marriage blues, quite natural for a girl coming from a broken family. The friends- a perpetually eager-to-get-hooked lawyer (Sonam Kapoor), a sex-and-sleep-starved mother of a toddler (Shikha Talsania) and an about-to-be-divorced badmouth boozer (Swara Bhaskar) are no big help to calm her nerves . Each girl is facing the hard reality that ‘There is no happily ever after’ in this life and has to overcome her own demons!
Verdict
Best buddies’ chemistry, marriage jitters, broken families, quirky characters and a big fat Punjabi wedding….the components that make up Veere Di Wedding have been seen before. Writers Nidhi Mehra and Mehul Suri, and director Shashanka Ghosh try to meld these set-pieces into a comic-cum-emotional entertainer exploring sexuality and relationships from a young upper crust female viewpoint.
The end result is patchy. The buddy chemistry part works fine; the wedding-cum-family part is predictable and the so-called bold brash ‘bad girl’ bits seem like put-on acts.
Even with a fairly competent cast and glossy production values, Veere Di Wedding seems more like a poser than the real thing. It tries too hard to shock and awe; pinch and cry; and tickle and giggle!
