U Me Aur Hum

Author: Dr. Mandar V. Bichu

After a long acting career Ajay Devgan decides to don the mantle of a director and he comes up with a remarkably mature and sensitive first film, which starts off as a run-of-the-mill romance but soon turns into an emotional roller- coaster dealing with Alzheimer’s disease- a mystery illness where the patient suffers from severe debilitating memory-loss.

A group of doctor friends- a feuding married couple (Sumeet Raghavan, Divya Dutta), a cooing couple taking their own time to decide about marriage and a fun-loving bachelor (Ajay Devgan)- are enjoying their vacation time on a luxury cruise. The last mentioned single-and-ready to mingle funster falls head over heels in love with a smart and good-looking waitress(Kajol) on the ocean liner. After a whirlwind romance and a serious misunderstanding, the lovers end up getting married but it doesn’t turn out to be ‘And they lived happily ever after’ love-story. The wife starts losing her memory and is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease- a progressive neurological illness, which threatens to destroy every dream she shared with her husband. How will they cope up with this seemingly incurable illness?

The film is well- researched and helps to educate the audience about the little known medical condition of Alzheimer’s disease and the stern challenges it poses for the patient and the family members. Devgan uses flashbacks and dissolves quite cleverly and the film does keep you interested till the end. There are a few occasions – like the ambling first half an hour, then the needless song ‘Saheli Jaisa Sainya’ and then an insipid party scene taking off on ‘Chalte Chalte Yun Hi Koi Mil Gaya Tha’- where the editor could have done a better job.

Ajay and Kajol are the cornerstones of this movie and this talented real life happy couple admirably portrays the on-screen troubled couple. For Kajol, this role of a young bubbly woman going down the abyss of amnesia offers a great chance to display her already acclaimed histrionic skills and she delivers. Ajay Devgan in the first hour of the film looks a bit too old as the hopeless romantic but in the second half, he steals the show with his portrayal of a frustrated husband who despite his love and his medical knowledge, finds it difficult to cope with his wife’s progressively downhill course. From the supporting cast, Sumeet Raghavan impresses with a sensitive performance.

All in all, U, Me Aur Hum is certainly one of the better films of the year. From a first time director, it is certainly a creditable and promising beginning!
