Thugs Of Hindostan
Year: 2018
Director: Vijay Krishna Acharya
Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Katrina Kaif, Fathima Sana Shaikh
The much-anticipated Yashraj spectacle came and sank like Titanic. Yet another proof that you can’t make a blockbuster just on the basis of gloss and glamour.
The promos were panned because they looked like desi imitation of Pirates of the Carribean. Although the movie was thankfully much different than the famous Hollywood franchise, it was a just flimsy excuse for a film.
What’s the plot?
A patriotic brigand (Amitabh Bachchan) and his loyal troupe have become thorns in the flesh for the cunning, scheming Britishers of East India Company. To capture this gang, the British hire an unscrupulous ‘Thug’ (Aamir Khan), who would go to any extent to make money and save his own skin. Will he serve their purpose, or will the spirited outlaws’ patriotic zeal wake up his conscience?
Verdict
The huge amounts spent on superstars, sets, songs-and-dances, stunts and special effects, cannot save this soulless storyline from being a total washout. The superstars fail to shine. Amitabh is tiresome and Aamir is unconvincing. The others are even worse. Such a shiny, senseless multi-starrer might have worked in the late 70s or early 80s, but in today’s world the jingoism, the tomfoolery, the sword-fights and the dialogue-baazi …all Masala-elements feel hopelessly outdated.
As Aamir himself accepted in his post-debacle assessment….’Mazaa nahi aaya!’
