Remakes of South Indian hits are proving to be safe bets for many film-makers. Ghajini, Wanted, Ready, Body Guard, Singham, Rowdy Rathore…the list is endless. Now Rajmouli’s Telugu hit Maryada Ramanna gets a Hindi (sorry- Punjabi!) makeover in Son Of Sardar. In one of his promotional interviews, Ajay Devgan coyly described how someone told him that it was his best ever role. So is it really so?
What’s the plot?
A feisty Sardar (Ajay Devgan) working in a London pub gets a notification that he has got some ancestral property in Punjab. The catch is that to dispose that property, he must come to his home-town where a headstrong muscleman (Sanjay Dutt) is waiting since years to kill him. The reason? A bitter feud, which has claimed lives from both families!
The strong rival is so committed to his killing vow that he has even indefinitely postponed his own marriage to his ladylove (Juhi Chawla). The Sardar- or rather the Son of Sardar now has to find ways to protect his own life and put an end to this ongoing rivalry. When he accidentally lands as a guest in the arch enemy’s house and falls in love with a young girl (Sonakshi Sinha) from that family, he learns that it won’t be such an easy task. Will he manage to achieve his goals?
What’s hot?
· Ajay Devgan and Sonakshi Sinha deliver good performances. Only thanks to them, the movie becomes somewhat bearable and even enjoyable at times.
· Salman’s cameo does add a little spark.
What’s not?
· Pathetic script/direction, poor humor and plenty of wasted screen-time through songs and stunts.
· Sanjay Dutt, Juhi Chawla and pretty much everybody in the film are painfully loud in their portrayals.
Verdict
In the past, Ajay Devgan has made quite a killing with his ‘All non-sense, full time-pass’ comic films (the likes of the Golmaal- trio, All The Best and Bol Bachchan). Like all those films, Son of Sardar also may hit the bull’s eye at the box-office but it has more in common with Ajay’s forgettable comic fares like Rascals and Dil To Bachcha Hai Ji. So in no way, it could be called as his best ever performance!
