A packet to be delivered, worth lacs of crime goods; an accidental switch of recipients; a pissed off gang-lord; his crazy cronies; some blissfully unaware go-betweens and an out of control spiral of madcap events. The formula has worked out well in the past in intelligent underworld-comedies like Waisa Bhi Hota Hai, 1.40 Ki Last Local, Sankat City and Utpatang . The same formula has also been used to death in no-brainer comedies like Apna Sapna Money Money and Golmaal 3. So what’s new that Delhi Belly brings to the table?
It brings in dollops of attitude- ‘F**k the world! And f**k the routine film-making norms!’ Yes, Delhi Belly thrives on this attitude more than anything else. There are no pulled punches; it is an all-out assault on the traditional sensibility and sensitivity. Lewd language, loud music, toilet humor, sex, violence…you name it and the film dishes it out in plenty. But while doing this, it also successfully manages to keep you in splits with an unending chain of zany sequences.
The performances are top-notch with the three friends (Imran Khan, Kunal Rai Kapoor and Vir Das) and the gang-lord (Vijay Raaz) being the top picks.
Director Abhinay Deo (son of the famous character artiste Ramesh Deo) is to be commended for pulling off such an outrageously irreverent comedy and the producer Aamir Khan should also be lauded for having the guts to back such a ‘dangerous’ project. The director’s success is not only in presenting an audacious laugh-riot; it is also in the fact that he manages to keep the characters and the settings so realistically down-to-earth, amidst all those over-the-top on-screen happenings.
In a way its star song – Bhaag DK Bose represents Delhi Belly’s soul. It is a film that is racy and raunchy and it is foul-mouthed and funny! This is new age, gen-next, no-holds-barred stuff, not at all suitable for the faint-hearted traditionalists and the self-appointed moralists! Watch it only if you fit the right tag!
