“A Yashraj movie featuring Rishi Kapoor; I have to see it.”

Yes, that was my reasoning to watch Bewaqoofiyaan. There was no question of seeing it for the lead pair since I have never fancied Sonam Kapoor (even though I liked her a lot in Raanjhanaa) and about Ayushman Khurana, too I have harbored mixed feelings (Very good in Vicky Donor; Average in Nautanki Saala). But when it comes to Rishi Kapoor, it is a different equation. I have always been a big fan of his and in particular, I have been totally bowled over by his stupendous second innings (Do Dooni Chaar, D-Day, Agneepath, Shuddh Desi Romance and so many other fab performances). So there was no question of giving this film a miss.

So how did I find the film?

What’s the plot?

The film tells a story of young couple (Ayushman and Sonam) madly in love with each other. Both are typical urban yuppies- high earning executives cozily comfortable in their lives centered round promotions, credit card limits, shopping and partying. But their marriage plans face one big obstacle- the girl’s father (Rishi Kapoor), a hard-nosed civil servant who is about to retire and who would rather marry his daughter to some wealthy businessman, than some company executive. The pop puts a condition that only after a complete background check on the boy, would he think about giving his permission to marry. Meanwhile the global recession takes its toll and the boy loses his plum job. The girl decides to hide the news from the father and the boy plays along. On one hand he has to hunt for a suitable job while fighting off the blues; on the other hand he has to pretend that everything is fine while trying to appease his hard-to-please would-be father-in-law. How will he manage this juggling act?

What’s hot?

·        The film depicts the dilemmas of modern urban love stories in a light-hearted manner.

·        The director Nupur Asthana keeps the film well-paced.

·        Ayushman Khurana and Rishi Kapoor do well as bickering guys who finally learn to see the good points about each other.

·        Sonam Kapoor plays the eye-candy (Bikini and all!) foil.

·        The typical plush Yashraj look and feel.

·        There are some good songs.

What’s not?

·        Thanks to its superficial treatment; none-too-imaginative humor and the decision to dabble into some ineffective emotional stuff, the film never rises above being an average entertainer.

·        The climax is childish.

Verdict

Bewaqoofiyaan is okay as a one-time watch. With better writing, it could have become much more watchable. By the way, my decision to watch it for Rishi Kapoor was the right one. He still emerged as the best thing from this fare!
